Don't stand under a tree in a storm

A few months ago, one of the trees on our property was struck by lightning.

I found it interesting to see the marks left on the bark of the tree, from the lightning strike.

Here's a closer look:

Very cool, huh? Although I have to admit, I'd be enjoying this science/nature moment a bit more, if the tree hadn't been right next to the building we're about to move into!I'm gonna hold on to that bit of folk wisdom - that lightning never strikes twice (in the same place)! I sure do hope it's true!

Wow! That is really cool. Lightening is so scary though. Years ago I was standing in my mother's kitchen looking out the window during a storm. I saw (and felt) lightening hit a tree in her backyard. It was awesome and terrifying.

Contrary to popular wisdom, lighting will strike the tallest object it can reach...and often strikes the same place. You need to either install a lightning rod, or think of cutting the tree down :( .

The same thing happened to a tree about 100 feet in front of our house this spring. My husband was in the (open) garage when it struck. It was amazing to see the way it wrapped around the tree.

Lightning is an amazing force. A tree on "our" property was struck a few years ago (before we lived here), caught fire, and burned completely away. Firefighters could not get to it.
Get rid of the tree and install a lightning rod!
