Just a nice picture

This photo of an old house was in a batch of pictures Boo brought back after her week with a visiting team. I've always loved old houses, they make me think of simpler times. I just wanted to post it here because I like looking at it, and I thought some of you might enjoy it, too.

My Minions

Very early this morning (before it was light), I heard a small, persistent noise coming from the kitchen. Frequently noises of this type indicate a situation with which I need to deal, so I listened hard to try to figure out what it was.

I ruled out dripping water, and it didn't sound like a mouse gnawing. Eventually I dragged myself out of bed to go find the cause of the disturbance.

The noise didn't stop when I turned on a light (roaches and mice would stop for light). I followed the sound and found that it was coming from somewhere near the back door. I still had trouble pinpointing the source.

Then, I examined a large metal stockpot, which had been used to make dog food yesterday. Ben had left it on the floor near the door, after he'd fed the dogs. There were bits of food stuck to the pan, and some burned-on food.

The sound was a group of large ants, scraping off the burned food - loudly enough that I could hear it in my bedroom!

I'm not fond of scrubbing pots, so I decided to let them continue. Life is good when the ants start helping me with the housework!!!!!

Catulaca

This is one of the lovely views I enjoy on my drives back and forth to Gracias. These fields and homes are on the outskirts of the village of Catulaca.

Not a Powerful Day!

Our house runs on solar power, which means that a day like this limits us - a LOT. We have to run the refrigerator and freezer, of course. We can usually postpone washing the laundry and running the dishwasher. Our oven is fueled by gas, but the oven has an electric thermostat which uses a surprisingly large amount of power, so we don't bake on rainy, overcast days. We also limit computer and TV usage.

The sun has been obscured now for several days in a row, so we're limping along without much power this week.

A LIfe Without Screens

Our house doesn't have screens on the windows or doors. This means that we sometimes have lovely guests like the one above, which landed on our kitchen table.

We also sometimes have less lovely guests. But for today, we'll just think about this one.

Christmas Honduras (and Sowers) Style!

It wouldn't be a Honduran Christmas without fireworks!

The Sowers menfolk take this a step further by using the fireworks to explode and/or propel other objects.

I have videos. Sadly, we didn't get a video of the exploding cow patties which were truly the highlight of the day. But the two videos I have posted will give you a taste of our celebration!

The videos were posted on Facebook, so you'll have to follow these links to see them. You do not, however, have to be signed in on Facebook. Enjoy!
