Shout Out to my Website Advisors . . .

Hey all - I made some changes on the website, based on the suggestions in the comments on the previous post. I think they're an improvement. Please take a look, and tell me what you think, okay? The changes only appear on the home page, right now. And Laurie, I've only been able to get rid of 2 buttons so far, but I'm still pondering that one.

In general, I think the site looks much less "feminine" than previously. Considering that it's really my hubby who does all the ministry work, and so much of that is construction, a less feminine look is probably not a bad thing. LOL.

Thanks friends!

I feel like I'm being so picky, but the buttons are still not quite there yet. Is it possible to make the font darker or bolder on them? Or maybe, in the other direction, make the buttons a solid dark with white lettering. Reading them is still effort-ful, and I think they should be easy to read.

Other than that, I like the way it looks.

No, Jennifer, picky is okay. I really want to hear your thoughts.

Unfortunately, I've never been able to figure out how to make the web design program I use (Microsoft FrontPage) change the lettering on buttons. It always comes out black, in that sort of Times New Roman font. I'd love to change that, but I still don't know how.

Maybe one of my readers knows how, and can give me a quick tutorial?

Wow, that plain background makes everything less busy and the pictures pop out better. I think the buttons are pretty east to see. My father, an old newspaper man used to say that the easiest thing to read is black on white.

I applaude you for being your own webdesigner so I feel a little bad being critical. I agree with Laurie....there are way, way too many buttons.

Once again, I know nothing about webdesign but some website have buttons with drop-downs. You could have something like "How You Can Help" and it could include what's there already, prayer requests and donations. You could combine "About this ministry", "ministry center", "visiting teams" & "newsletter archives" under one button, etc. If possible, come up with 3-4 main "topics" (or whatever it should be called) and then categorize all the other things under the main category.

When I go to a website I want to be able to navigate where I want to go from the top of the website and not have to scroll down to find the button that takes me where I want to go. One example of what I'm trying to say is the World Gospel Outreach website (which I have no affiliation with). There are five primary buttons along the top that have drop-downs.

I'm in awe of all that you do...as a family and a ministry. You seem to do it all so well, too. I'm giving you suggestions only because you asked.

May God continue to bless you and your ministry.

Thanks Jane! I'm glad the "look" of the blog seems better.

Cindy, it's okay to be critical - I asked for it! Unfortunately your suggestions are running up against my limited abilities - and possibily the limits of the archaic program I'm using. The FrontPage program is old, and I'm hoping to not have to invest in something newer just yet. I'll keep looking, as it's very possible the program can do something like drop-down buttons, if I can figure out how to tell it to do that.

I've tried to do something like the idea of drop-down buttons, by sorting the sets of buttons into categories. Originally I had four categories (the second row of buttons at the top used to be grouped separately, at the bottom of the page), but I was afraid the set at the bottom of the page wasn't being seen. Similarly, At one point I had the subsets of the two types of ministry on a second page, so, for instance, you had to click on the "ministry to pastors" button to find the page with the option to go to the "Church Construction" page - but again, I wasn't sure that people would be finding what they were looking for when I did that. Also, my personal pet peeve is sites where I can't get where I'm going from the home page - probably a pet peeve because I'm always on a slower connection. I hate having to open page after page to get where I need to go . . .

I do appreciate the suggestions on how to make this work better!

Cindy is a keeper. Maybe when she is not so busy, she and I will can drop by your place. Icons or not, we love you!

Trish, when I look at the website homepage, some of the buttons seem to be blocking or overlapping the text above, specifically under the goal headings. So, under primary goals, The last words I can read are, "discipling the new". Then, under secondary goals, the last word, "country", is on top of one of the buttons. I don't know if that's a problem with your page or with my view of it, but I figured I'd mention it. I'm using an iPad if that matters.

Cindy and Laurie - head on over here! I'm pretty much always home (somebody has to feed all of these animals). Thanks for your sweet words!

Ruby - thanks for letting me know about that problem. Although it looks okay on my computer, and on my son's laptop, I'm pretty sure I know how I went wrong, in the part of the page you mentioned. At any rate, I have an idea of something that I can change, that might fix it!

Hey, Trish, looks like you fixed that problem I mentioned.
