Children's Day--a Big Honking Deal!

Children’s Day in Honduras is what could be called a BIG HONKING DEAL! It is also something that benefits you because this post is filled with pictures of happy, celebrating children. That automatically makes this post at least a medium honking deal! So, let’s talk about Children’s Day while you peruse some cute pictures.

What is Children’s Day? Um, it’s like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Grandparents’ Day except it’s for children instead of mothers, fathers, and grandparents. But you probably already figured that one out all on your own with your impressive deductive reasoning skills. It is unclear how this celebration has escaped the U.S, but Children’s day is celebrated in many countries throughout the world. Note: The interwebs indicates that the U.S. does observe National Child’s Day on the first Sunday in June, but that clearly doesn’t have the same level of attention as Children’s Day. There doesn’t even seem to be candy involved in National Child’s Day, whereas Children’s Day in Honduras involves a lot of candy!

Just imagine that you asked an actual child to create a holiday for children. What might it involve? That’s pretty much what you get with Children’s Day - kids doing things kids enjoy doing. They play games. They dance. They consume the aforementioned candy. Sometimes students also have cake and soda. Some schools even provide a celebratory meal for students. Sowers4Pastors helped out by providing candy (sometimes cake and soda) to the schools in sponsorship locations.

Kim Hall visited each of the Manna locations on Children’s Day and captured the happy images you see before you. These kids don’t celebrate Christmas with piles of presents under a tree. Children in Honduras who receive a gift on Christmas likely get something like socks. While socks are needed, they don’t provide the same “wow” factor as the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots you might have received when you were a kid. So, Children’s Day is a day to let these children celebrate like only a kid hopped up on a significant amount of candy can!

Trish pointed out that Children’s Day may have extra importance in the area served by S4P and Manna because of the high poverty level throughout those communities. So, they happily delivered their sweet supplies out to numerous sites. Some of the teachers went out to the Sowers’ property to get the candy, arriving by taxi. That included three women and a tiny baby who came in a single small taxi to collect candy for the kids of Crucitas (Kirstin apologizes for not getting a photo). The staff at S4P are grateful that helping these communities in this way is one more way they can make life a little better for these kids. It’s always worth a little effort to help children make sweet memories.
